As one of the largest known hard rock lithium deposits in the world, Wodgina Lithium Project is a Tier 1 asset.
Wodgina commenced operations in April 2017, mining Lithium Direct Shipping Ore (DSO). In 2018 we commenced an expansion of the Wodgina site to enable us to produce spodumene concentrate and, potentially, lithium hydroxide.
On 1 November 2019, Mineral Resources completed the transaction with Albemarle for the partial sale of the Wodgina Lithium Project and established the MARBL joint venture, with Mineral Resources holding a 40% interest and Albemarle holding a 60% interest. As part of the transaction, Mineral Resources received a 40% interest in two 25ktpa lithium hydroxide modules in Kemerton, Western Australia, which are currently under construction.
Spodumene Concentrate Plant
During 2019, the three-train Spodumene Concentrate Plant, capable of producing 833,000 wet tonnes (750,000 dry tonnes) of 6% spodumene concentrate per annum, was completed.
As a brownfields site, Wodgina had existing infrastructure in place. However, to cater for the Spodumene Concentrate Plant, a number of upgrades were undertaken. These upgrades included an 81km, 10-inch natural gas pipeline, a 64MW gas-fired power station, expansion of accommodation facilities, extension to tailings storage facilities and an upgrade to the water supply infrastructure, as well as an airstrip near the mine site with the capability to land commercial size aircraft.
The Kemerton lithium hydroxide modules, when complete, will be capable of processing the spodumene produced at Wodgina. The Joint Venture will assess the optimal use of the Kemerton Modules and processing of Wodgina spodumene.
Both MRL and Albemarle have the option to develop new downstream processing facilities at Wodgina or another location.
Tailings Storage Facility
Tailings management is a critical part of managing the risks of the waste produced from the mining process. We construct, operate and decommission our dam facilities in a safe and compliant manner; consistent with regulatory requirements, applicable guidelines and standards. Our recently constructed Wodgina tailings facility has been given the thumbs up about the start-up performance. Read more
