Young minds explore MinRes lithium mine

MinRes recently welcomed 27 mining engineering students to our Mt Marion lithium project for their first on-site mining experience.

A mix of local and international undergraduate and Masters students from the WA School of Mines (WASM) joined WASM professors and students visiting WA for the International Mining Games for a behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s most impressive hard rock lithium operations.

Mt Marion is located approximately 40km south-west of Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, jointly owned by MinRes (50%) and one of the world’s largest lithium hydroxide producers, Ganfeng Lithium (50%).

MinRes manages all mining operations at Mt Marion, along with a spodumene concentrate plant currently being expanded to a production capacity of 900,000 tonnes per annum of mixed-grade spodumene concentrate.

Lithium is the most important mineral to support decarbonisation and, as a global top-five lithium producer, MinRes is producing materials needed to support the world’s growing demand for battery-powered technology.

Students made the most of their time at Mt Marion by enjoying an extensive look at the open pit mine and spodumene processing plant, while also participating in a variety of presentations covering regular site activities and the many roles required to maintain a world-class lithium operation.

For many in the group, this was their first visit to a mine site and none had previously experienced a lithium operation.

MinRes Learning Specialist, Zoe Clements, accompanied the group and said the tour was a great opportunity to build on our relationship with WASM while promoting our vacation and graduate programs to prospective future employees.

“Students found the experience fascinating and they had plenty of questions, particularly about the lithium mining process, and the environmental impacts and sustainability of mining,” Zoe said.

“Our Mt Marion project is supported by over 600 people across various roles and experience levels – including entry-level and graduate positions – each building their own career path by supporting this world-class lithium operation.”
