About Ear Science Institute Australia

Ear Science Institute Australia (Ear Science) is an independent, not-for-profit medical research institute dedicated to improving the lives of people with ear and hearing disorders.

Through a multi-disciplinary team of researchers and clinicians, Ear Science delivers innovative treatments and develops groundbreaking cures for tomorrow’s generation.

A core aspect of Ear Science’s work focuses on improving hearing outcomes for people in rural Australia through its Healthy Hearing Outback program.

This initiative has supported the Nyiyaparli and Martu people in the East Pilbara region since 2014, delivered in partnership with the Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service and funded by Rural Health West.

The program provides ear, nose and throat consultations and audiology services, while upskilling local health professionals and community members.

MinRes’ partnership

Mineral Resources (MinRes) and Ear Science joined forces in 2023, which enabled Ear Science to appoint a dedicated Ear Health Coordinator for on-the-ground patient support.

“I work closely with patients, their families and the Aboriginal Medical Service and other healthcare providers to ensure patients get the care that they need,” said Ear Health Coordinator Lucy Mitchell.

“A big part of my role is to support patients to navigate this system in a culturally appropriate way and in a way that works best for them.”

Lucy said the program’s success stems from a regular presence in the community.

“It’s only successful with strong relationships and trust, which isn’t forged overnight – it takes time to develop,” she added.

MinRes Manager Communities and Stakeholder Engagement Daniel Barker recognised the positive outcomes this partnership has delivered to the local community.

“This program is about more than just coordinating treatment – it’s breaking down barriers to healthcare access in some of Australia’s most remote communities,” Daniel said.

“By working with Ear Science, we’re helping shape lasting change, ensuring specialist care is accessible without having to leave Country, family or culture.”
