MinRes and West Coast tackle hunger with Foodbank WA

Published on 2 May 2023

Mineral Resources joined forces with the West Coast Eagles at the weekend to raise more than $160,000 for Foodbank WA’s Million Meal Challenge.

Volunteers from MinRes were at Optus Stadium on Saturday to encourage Eagles fans to dig deep and support Western Australians struggling to put food on the table.

It was the second year that MinRes has supported the fundraising campaign, with the company pledging to double all donations up to the value of $50,000. This was in addition to a $100,000 donation made by MinRes earlier this year amid record-breaking demand for Foodbank WA’s services.

Rising cost-of-living pressures is seeing more than 1,000 households shopping with the charity on same days, with demand surging 90 per cent over the past two years.

MinRes Chief Executive Officer, Lithium Josh Thurlow supported the cause at Saturday’s game alongside Foodbank WA Chief Executive Officer Kate O’Hara.

“No one in our State should go without food, not even for a day,” Josh said.

“That’s why MinRes is proud to partner with Foodbank to help put food on the table of Western Australian households who are doing it tough during the cost-of-living crisis.”

MinRes Graduate Health and Safety Advisor Tanikka Gravett gave up her time to volunteer at the Million Meal Challenge, which has now raised over $275,000 since 2001.

“It’s heartbreaking to think of families and children missing out on vital meals,” said Tanikka, whose mother and brother also gave up their time to rattle the tin.

“Having the opportunity to help in a small way can make a huge difference in people’s lives. That’s why I volunteered to raise money and help those doing it tough in our community.”

Talent Advisor – Sourcing, Sandra Markovic was another member of the 34-strong MinRes team that took part before, during and after the Eagles’ clash with the Carlton Blues.

“I loved participating on Saturday and after speaking to my circle about this, inspired a friend who went on to donate $150. Thanks to MinRes for organising it and doubling donations.”
