MinRes introduces reusable crib kits across sites

Mineral Resources (MinRes) has eliminated thousands of single-use meal containers from its operations by rolling out more than 5,000 reusable crib kits to its workforce — a move aimed at reducing waste and costs while driving positive change across its Western Australian mine sites.

The initiative aligns with the Western Australian Government’s Waste Avoidance and Resource Recovery Strategy 2030 and focuses on changing habits around “crib” – packed meals prepared by fly-in, fly-out workers before starting their shift.

For years, these meals relied on disposable containers, generating significant waste. Through the phased introduction of reusable crib kits, MinRes is now tackling the problem at its source.

Reusable kits

Based on employee feedback, MinRes developed an eight-piece reusable kit designed for both practicality and durability.

To ensure effective uptake, supporting infrastructure was installed across sites to enable the hygienic washing of all items. Each kit includes:

  • 1.8L stainless steel thermal water bottle
  • stainless steel 420mL coffee cup
  • six-piece stainless steel cutlery set with straw and cleaner
  • four reusable food containers (3 x 1100mL, 1 x 350mL)
  • canvas insulated crib bag.

Kits don’t just replace disposable packaging, they eliminate unnecessary waste, reduce associated transport emissions and deliver long-term cost savings for the business.

The rollout

Rolling out more than 5,000 kits across operational sites required close coordination between our Village Management, Operations and Communications teams.

We began with pilots at our Wodgina and Mt Marion lithium operations. These trials allowed us to refine the change management process, tailoring communications and infrastructure solutions to each site’s specific needs.

MinRes Manager Sustainability Kyle Hodgson said the introduction of reusable items at operational mine sites has slashed the volume of crib containers destined for landfill.

“In addition to the environmental advantages, these responsible choices are already delivering long-term cost savings for the business, a clear demonstration that being sustainable makes good business sense” Kyle said.

Partnering for quality

MinRes collaborated with Western Australian family business Rugged Xtremes to ensure kits were made to withstand the rigours of remote mining environments.

Their experience producing durable, climate-appropriate gear meant MinRes could deliver high-quality, branded kits on time and at scale, encouraging uptake and maximising longevity.

A catalyst for change

The introduction of reusable crib kits is about more than reducing waste – they’re sparking conversations about sustainability across the MinRes workforce.

The project has encouraged employees to embrace the circular economy and inspired other initiatives, including our Containers for Change recycling program and proposals to provide compact kits for travelling Perth-based employees and those on third-party sites.

Recognising success

Reusable crib kits were recognised when MinRes was named a finalist in the Waste Authority's WasteSorted Awards 2025 in the Business Award category.

MinRes also showcased the project alongside the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER) at the Waste and Resource Recovery Conference.

DWER recently profiled MinRes Manager Village Operations Marc Fury, discussing the lessons learned and strategies that made the rollout a success.

With clear environmental benefits, measurable cost savings and a shift towards better resource management, the reusable crib kit initiative is a proud milestone in MinRes’ sustainability journey.
