About Waalitj Foundation
The Waalitj Foundation is an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation providing education, employment and business opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people by working together to empower and build capacity among individuals, families and communities.
The Foundation runs the Onslow Family Support Program, aimed at families in Onslow and the Bindi Bindi community, with the primary focus of improving school attendance and capacity in parents and caregivers.
Waalitj Foundation Onslow Family Support Manager Suzanne Wilson said the program delivered meaningful, long-term outcomes for young people and families in the town.
“Through the Onslow Family Support Program, we can build trusted relationships, support school engagement, connect families with services, and create opportunities for young people to strengthen their connection to culture," Wilson said.
“This partnership allows us to be a reliable presence in the community and continue making a positive difference in the lives of local families.”
MinRes' partnership
Mineral Resources (MinRes)has supported of the Waalitj Foundation since the company began developing its Onslow Iron project.
In addition to supporting the Onslow Family Support Program, the partnership has also helped bring Waalitj Foundation mentors to Onslow to work directly with young people and families. IMportnatly this has included support for on-Country activities promoting a stronger connection to culture.
MinRes Manager Communities and Stakeholder Engagement Daniel Barker said the Onslow Family Support Program played an important role in the community.
“Partnering with organisations such as the Waalitj Foundation allows us to get behind programs that drive school attendance, engagement and cultural connection,” Barker said.
