Cory drives reliability at Ken’s Bore

At Onslow Iron’s Ken’s Bore operation, it’s impossible to miss the fleet of dump trucks, diggers, drills, dozers and ancillary equipment lining the site.

These machines are the heartbeat of the operations and ensuring they’re available, operational and performing at their peak is Mineral Resources (MinRes) Asset Management Group (AMG).

AMG provides component replacement and machine overhaul services for Onslow Iron’s large fleet – many of which were purchased new - something Leading Hand Heavy Diesel (HD) Fitter Cory Cruttenden says is a point of difference.

“As an owner-operator site, MinRes was able to purchase many machines brand new, which has given us the opportunity to work on new bits of gear, meaning we all take pride and ownership in the gear we’ve been provided,” Cory said.

Supported by a facility in Kwinana, the Ken’s Bore AMG team works in a well-stocked 12,143m2 workshop, boasting four service bays and specialised tooling, meaning crews always have what they need to get the job done safely and efficiently.

Like many, Cory’s journey began working for an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), before making the shift to fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) roles.

“I’ve spent a lot of time in the Pilbara at Tier 1 mining companies and also some time contracting,” he explained.

“That led me to MinRes, and I was excited to see some of the opportunities they had to offer at the Onslow Iron project.”

Cory started at Ken’s Bore as a Workshop HD Fitter, before progressing to a Pit Fitter and eventually the Leading Hand HD Fitter and Step Up Supervisor role he’s currently in – one he said provides him with significant variety in his day-to-day roles.

“Being Leading Hand, I’m responsible for all pit breakdowns and planned maintenance – whether that’s diggers, drills, trucks or any form of ancillary equipment,” he said.

“No two days are the same.”

But while keeping equipment running is at the core of AMG’s capability, it’s the permanent contracts that the division offers on a 2:1 roster that help provide greater job security and removes casual unpredictability – something that helps it stand out in a competitive market.

Cory said one of the most unique aspects of AMG was its commitment to ongoing upskilling, providing the ability to gain training from OEMs and in-house teams, which contributed to career progression and continued personal development.

“MinRes differs from other companies with the exciting opportunities they have, and they provide a lot of upper leadership coaching and guidance,” Cory explained.

“They’re big on career progression, upskilling their team members and valuing their development in the team.”

“We have excellent salaries, great potential for additional earning, work-life balance and career progression at MinRes.”

For Cory, working at Ken’s Bore offers an additional, unique perk – the ability to live in the award-winning Mungala Resort with his partner and Dump Truck Operator, Deni.

Mungala Resort is leading MinRes’ efforts to set the standard for facilities, food and flights in the Western Australian resources sector.

Located opposite Ken’s Bore Airport, which is serviced by in-house airline MinRes Air, the resort features 500 rooms three times the size of traditional FIFO accommodation for all residents alongside an extensive list of amenities and industry-leading food options.

“Sharing the resort style accommodation with my partner truly provides a home away from home and makes work more enjoyable to come to,” Cory said.

“It’s like nothing I’ve experienced working the Pilbara.”
