First pods occupied at Onslow Iron

Published on 21 December 2023

The first resort-style accommodation pods at the Ken’s Bore site are being occupied by members of our Onslow Iron team.

It’s a significant milestone for our CSI Construction and Village Operations teams who are progressively installing 250 pods with a total of 500 rooms at Ken’s Bore ready for full occupation in 2024.

The pods, fabricated in Perth by remote housing specialists The Complete Group, are designed to be suitable for singles or couples, with rooms three times the size of traditional FIFO accommodation.

Queen size beds, in-room washer-dryer, big screen television with video call function, kitchenettes and an outdoor veranda with electric barbecue are some of the features.

Couple Kylee Jones and Beau Clark, both Plant Operators working at Onslow Iron, recently moved into one of the first pods.

“This accommodation provides a home away from home,” Kylee said.

“Something as simple as being able to just sit on a couch and watch a movie together brings back an intimacy that is normally only possible offsite.

“There’s a genuine community feeling which will certainly have a positive impact on peoples’ mental health. It really makes you feel valued as an employee.”

The couple singled out the washer-dryer in each pod as one of the best features – meaning there’s no need to contend with the communal laundry and more time to relax.

Construction is currently underway at the 500-room Ken’s Bore Resort and at the 250-room Onslow Resort.

Amenities at both resorts are set to include an Olympic-size swimming pool, bistro, lounge, indoor fitness centre, recreation building and sports courts.

MinRes General Manager, Infrastructure Tim Clements said the Onslow Iron accommodation set a new industry standard.

“Everything is a first from a construction point of view and the rooms are just one part of it,” Tim said.

“The amenities are designed to improve the quality of peoples’ downtime and create a complete lifestyle experience, from the restaurants, gyms, sporting facilities, medical centre – the list goes on.”

The Complete Group Managing Director Emanuel Dillon added: “I was personally thrilled to have a forward-thinking client prepared to reset the benchmark for site-based accommodation.”
