Advancing mental health at MinRes

Wherever Mineral Resources (MinRes) people are working, mental health support is never far away.

That's the goal behind Mind Matters, MinRes’ in-house counselling service helping ensure mental health is treated with the same priority as physical health.

Mind Matters is a free and confidential in-house counselling service available to all employees and their immediate family members.

The service is delivered by a team of psychologists and counsellors employed directly by MinRes, each with an understanding of the unique challenges faced by the mining industry and fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) workers and the company’s unique structure and priorities.

The team offers face-to-face and telehealth appointments at the Mind Matters Centre in Perth, along with dedicated on-the-ground support across MinRes-owned sites and more than 20 client sites throughout Western Australia.

The in-house offering removes long wait lists often associated with mental health referrals and the significant cost that can come with accessing private services.

Mind Matters delivered more than 700 new consultations in FY26, reflecting how deeply the service is embedded in day-to-day life at MinRes.

Head of Mental Health April Jones is focused on deepening the impact of Mind Matters across the business.

"What’s been built with Mind Matters is something genuinely special," Jones said.

"To be part of an organisation where mental health is already taken seriously, with a professional and evidence-based service delivered by highly skilled and experienced clinicians, is an incredible foundation to build from.

"My focus is on making sure we keep growing, reaching more people, listening to what they need and continuing to foster our strong mental health culture."

Mental Health First Aid

Alongside the Mind Matters clinical service, MinRes invests heavily in building mental health literacy across its workforce.

The company runs Mental Health First Aid sessions throughout the year, led by in-house accredited clinicians and giving employees the skills to recognise, respond to and support colleagues who may be experiencing mental health challenges.

Mind Matters Senior Clinician Royce Gelmi delivers the training and has seen firsthand the difference it makes.

"What Mental Health First Aid training really does is give people the confidence to have a conversation they might otherwise shy away from," Gelmi said.

"It's about helping people identify when someone might be struggling and knowing what to do next. You don't need to have all the answers; you just need to be willing to show up."

More than 200 employees are trained Mental Health First Aiders, guiding important conversations with colleagues across MinRes office and site locations.

Ambassador program

Building on this foundation, MinRes established the Mental Health First Aid Ambassador program to provide structured support for employee volunteers to be a visible and trusted point of contact for their colleagues.

Ambassadors have completed Mental Health First Aid training and are on hand to help build a culture where people feel comfortable speaking up, reaching out and looking out for one another.

With trained and supported Ambassadors at MinRes locations across the state, MinRes is helping ensure that wherever someone works, there is always someone nearby who is equipped and willing to help guide them towards the right support.

MinRes has also achieved advanced accreditation with Mental Health First Aid Australia, a mark of the standard of its service and one the company intends to maintain and exceed in the years ahead.
